In cooperation with the District of Columbia Government and members of the community, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has aggressively identified nuisance properties, both residential and commercial, which create an environment that promotes crime and violence in our neighborhoods. Such properties are used for numerous illegal activities, including drug trafficking, robbery, prostitution and public drinking. Where appropriate, our office has brought civil actions against the owners of these properties.
Settlements have been negotiated with property owners resulting in additional safety measures for neighbors and residents including:
additional lighting
fencing
security cameras
uniformed guards Other property owners have simply sold the property or closed the business. These actions help reduce crime on our streets and improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
