St. Elizabeths Hospital brings TLC to Ward 8
The transformation of the St. Elizabeths Hospital campus from a home for psychiatric patients into a home for the 22-agency Department of Homeland Security is the largest public works project since the building of the Pentagon. This massive redevelopment on a bluff overlooking the Anacostia River will revitalize 62 vacant and deteriorating historic structures on the west campus to create office space for 14,000 employees.
That work could result a model federal project, blending neighborhood revitalization, historic preservation and eco-friendly design.
