Anacostia Art Gallery & Boutique
The Anacostia Art Gallery & Boutique features the best selection of fine art & crafts, African artifacts, unique home accessories and collectibles East of the River. The Gallery operates two boutiques on Bae’s Place, featuring designer collections of wearable art & accessories and Furaha’s Lotus Room, specializing in unique products for the mind, body and soul. The gallery is operating a satellite location at the Anacostia Arts Center during LUMEN8.

Cynthia Sands
In 1976, Sands moved to Zaire a 26 year odyssey of living in Africa. Years of exposure to the day to day cultural, social, political, and economic realities of life in Zaire, Uganda, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana and Guyana led her to study the signs and symbols on textiles as a visual history of indigenous African people. She calls textiles the indigenous newspaper – a visual record and organic methodology that preserves traditional art forms. Sands’ uses new dye and color applications, experiments with original methods and materials from Africa.

Kinks, Locs and Love Locks
Film description:
Kinks, Locs, and Love takes a visual “snapshot” of the natural hair care community in the Washington, DC area by featuring women describing their natural hair journey, entrepreneurs catering to women with natural hair, and natural hair web enthusiasts. This film will enlighten audiences how African American women with natural hair view feel about themselves, their hair, and their friends and family with and without natural hair. This film will also showcase how natural hair care business owners thrive by serving the natural hair community.
