'The Taming of the Shrew is one of William Shakespeare’s most famous romantic comedies. It’s also widely known for its controversial take on male/female relationships and the misogynistic elements it employs once Kate marries Petruchio. Pallas Theatre Collective’s production plans to soften these elements by focusing on the romance between Petruchio and Kate and the comedy that results when the two spar with each other and other members of their community. Artistic Director Ty Hallmark’s Shrew is set on a Louisiana Bayou in the early part of the 20th century. Petruchio has returned home after being away for school in New Orleans. He has mixed feelings about coming back to his old habitat, his old way of life. He is now a man of philosophy and ideas. He is cosmopolitan and struggles with the simplicity of bayou life. Kate represents the crass, coarse, and rudimentary ways he left behind but he is also immediately drawn to her, now a woman, not the child he remembers. Likewise, Kate senses Petruchio’s worldly arrogance. It makes her feel diminished in a way that feels familiar. Once he learns to accept the two versions of himself and find the balance therein, she meets him halfway and love blossoms under a moonlit Louisiana night. Our Taming of the Shrew will work to answer Pallas’ season question – How Far Would You Go … Before you come home.
