April 25 - 29 | DC Spring Cleaning Events

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser kicked-off a District-wide spring cleaning campaign at the  Fort Totten Transfer Station. Continuing tomorrow until the end of the week, the campaign will highlight District resources available to help DC residents remove waste; keeping homes and the city clean and healthy to live in.
“In a city as prosperous as ours, beautifying our neighborhoods and keeping our city clean and healthy is essential,” said Mayor Bowser. “Our DPW team works year-round clearing residential streets, removing graffiti, collecting leaves and holiday trees, clearing snow and ice from our roadways, and removing trash and recycling among many other things. To keep our city in tip-top shape, it also takes community involvement. My District-wide spring cleaning campaign highlights the services offered by DPW to help residents keep the District clean, so that they can continue to live, work, and play in our great city.”
At today’s kick-off event, Mayor Bowser and District Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Christopher Shorter explained the vast number of services offered by DPW at the Fort Totten Transfer Station; including the disposal of solid waste, household hazardous waste, unwanted electronic equipment, and personal document shredding.
The Fort Totten Transfer Station operates as a one-stop location for waste removal. The Station’s hours of operation for resident use are Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Hazardous waste/E-cycling services are only offered on Saturdays and the first Thursday preceding the first Saturday of the month, and personal document shredding is only offered on the first Saturday of each month.
DPW staff at the Fort Totten Transfer Station will remove all waste items from personal resident vehicles. Businesses must use a commercial hauler. In addition to waste removal, DPW provides District residents with up to five 32-gallon bags of free compost. DPW will also deliver 12 cubic feet of compost to neighborhoods.
