MY LIT PICK! Aug 3 | Poetic Vibes featuring Glo Shines @ Honfleur Gallery

Poetic Vibes is an artistic environment for creatives and lovers of poetry and spoken word. Inspiration, cultivation, and representation of our individual life experiences and challenges draw us together to wade in a watering hole of kinetic synergy. #PoeticVibesDC Poetic Vibes is created and hosted by Harvey Fitz in conjunction with The Anacostia Arts Center. It takes place every first Friday of each month at the Honfleur Gallery 1241 Good Hope Rd SE, Washington, DC 20020 from 8pm-10pm. There is a $10 cover.

Our August artist feature will be the very incredible Glo Shines

Glo Shines is a poet, emcee, host and a lover of all facets of art. Born in Brooklyn, NY her earliest writings were raps that solidified her space in the budding culture of Hip Hop, of which her life is permanently intertwined. As student of Old Dominion University, she was first exposed to spoken word poetry through an open mic event called Etymology. Her writings skate the line between Hip Hop and Poetry merging into a hybrid with no need nor desire to be labeled.

She has featured nationally at Nicolas Bookstore in New York, Tuesday Verses in Richmond, VA and Wednesday Verses in Washington, DC, and the renowned Apache Café in Atlanta, GA. She has also featured and hosted locally at several notable venues including the Chrysler Museum, The Harrison Opera House, Old Dominion University, Hampton University, Downing Gross Community Center, The Funny Bone and the Newsome House. In 2016, Glo Shines had the privilege of being the opening act for the legendary Dick Gregory. She has performed for and worked with the public school systems of Norfolk, Hampton, and Newport News. She has also worked with various charities including Parents against bullying, the Boys and Girls Club, and Teens with a Purpose.

She was the co-creator and host of the local radio show “The elements of Hip Hop”, a weekly forum that examined the origin and evolution of Hip Hop, by studying its five elements. Currently, she is the host and co-founder Verses and Vibes a monthly spoken word event that has been running for 5 years in the Hampton Roads Area! She takes great pride in being a host interacting with the artist and audience and offering the same type of forum that was once was offered her.

In 2013, she released her first album called “Glyphs and Graffiti”, which was a culmination of evolution as an Emcee and poet. Currently she is recording two new projects and writing a lifestyle blog named LetzGlo, which serves as an additional avenue of expression.

Her goals are to continue to grow as a writer, host, and performer, and create art that educates, entertains and elevates! Letz Glo!!
