TRASH PICKUP HOLIDAY SCHEDULE
The Department of Public Works (DPW) today announced the following holiday schedule for services through January 2009:
Christmas Day: Thursday, December 25, 2008DPW will be closed and most services will be suspended, including DPW trash, recycling and leaf collections, and parking enforcement, including rush hour and residential zone violations. All services will resume Friday, December 26, 2008; however, since the federal government will be closed that day, DPW will not enforce rush-hour parking violations. All other parking violations, e.g., meters, bus stops, fire hydrants, will be enforced. Trash and recycling collections will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week. For example, Thursday trash and recycling collections will be made on Friday and Friday’s collections will be made on Saturday. Trash and recycling containers should be put out for collection no earlier than 6:30 pm the night before collection and removed from public space by 8 pm on the day(s) of collection.

New Year’s Day: Thursday, January 1, 2009On New Year’s Day, DPW will be closed and most services will be suspended, including DPW trash, recycling and leaf collections, and parking enforcement, including rush hour and residential zone violations. All services will resume Friday, January 2, 2009. Trash and recycling collections will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week following the Christmas schedule example above.
Holiday Tree Collection: January 2–11, 2009Residents who receive DC trash collection service are encouraged to place holiday trees and other greenery in curbside tree boxes—without ornaments or tinsel—by January 2, 2009. Trees will be picked up during a special two-week collection from January 2-11. Trees not collected by January 17 should be placed with your regular trash. DPW will collect the trees, along with the regular trash, as truck space permits over the following weeks. Residents also can bring trees to the Ft. Totten Transfer Station weekdays, 1 pm-5 pm, and Saturdays, 8 am-3 pm, for free tree chipping.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: Monday, January 19, 2009
In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, DPW offices will be closed and most services will be suspended, including DPW trash and recycling collections and parking enforcement. All DPW services resume on Inauguration Day Tuesday, January 20. Trash and recycling collections will continue to slide one day citywide for the rest of the week. For example, Monday trash and recycling collections will be made on Tuesday. Trash and recycling containers should be put out for collection no earlier than 6:30 pm the night before collection and removed from public space by 8 pm on the day(s) of collection.
Inauguration Day, Tuesday, January 20, 2009
Trash and recyclables: will be collected on Inauguration Day.
Parking enforcement: will occur in the vicinity of Inaugural activities as posted, as well as for bus stops, fire hydrants, and spaces designated with “No Parking Anytime” signs. There will be no rush hour or residential zone enforcement.
Ft. Totten Trash Transfer Station: located at 4900 Bates Road, NE (open weekdays 1pm to 5pm and Saturdays from 8am to 3pm), will be open for residents to bring bulk trash.
