The audience will find themselves in a Chicago congregation where the story of Oedipus The King is a minister’s topic for Sunday’s sermon!
The Pastor’s tale unfolds in the fictional West African country of “Thebes.” Original music composition by Lean & Hungry veteran composer Tom Carman will center on traditional African instrumentation, including djembe and kora. The cast features the talents of former African Continuum Artistic Director Jennifer Nelson, A.J. Calbert, Duyen Washington, William T. Newman Jr. and the 20 voice gospel choir from St. Philip the Evangelist Episcopal Church in Anacostia.
This one-hour adaptation will be broadcast live on WAMU 88-5 FM, Washington's most listened to radio station. Each cast member plays multiple roles, and helps create live foley sound effects.
Doors open at 5pm, with an immersive marketplace in the lobby showcasing art made from African craftspeople. The performance and live broadcast begins at 6pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students/military/seniors with ID, and free for children 12 and under.
