About ANC 6/8F - Representing the Residents of Navy Yard

WHY IT MATTERS
Three years ago, Washington, DC, approved new ward boundaries. However, many residents still do not know that the Navy Yard neighborhood, which was part of Ward 6, is now in Ward 8. It is also important to note that while most of Navy Yard is in Ward 8, a small section still belongs to Ward 6.

Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6/8F covers areas of Navy Yard from both Ward 6 and Ward 8. This fact may surprise some people, and possibly a certain DC councilmember (but you didn't hear that from me).

As I expand the coverage of Congress Heights on the Rise to include Navy Yard, I want to share the basics about Advisory Neighborhood Commission 8F and its current commissioners. This information is important to help encourage Ward 8 residents on both sides of the Anacostia River to get more involved. Your participation makes the community stronger.

HOW IT MATTERS
Washington, DC, has 40 Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs). Each ANC includes 2 to 12 elected commissioners who make decisions on local issues, such as liquor licenses, parking, and sanitation. These decisions affect your daily life. ANCs are the closest form of local government, and your involvement is essential for shaping your community.

Each commissioner in an ANC represents a Single Member District (SMD), which includes about 2,000 residents. You elect your ANC commissioner every two years in non-partisan elections.

ANCs advise the DC government on issues affecting their communities, including parking, recreation, street improvements, liquor licenses, zoning, restaurants, police matters, sanitation, and the District’s annual budget.

ANC commissioners also manage several thousand dollars in grant money to improve their areas and can hire staff for the ANC. This control allows them to make important positive changes in our community, and your involvement helps ensure these funds are used effectively.

Community Concerns should be submitted to ANC 8F in writing at least 48 hours in advance.
Community members are allotted three minutes to speak on any concern. CONTACT HERE.
