Horton's Kids, Inc. seeks Part-Time Youth Case Manager

Horton’s Kids is a community-based organization working to drive positive change in the lives of 500 children in grades K – 12 living in one of the most under-resourced communities in southeast Washington, DC, called Wellington Park. In this neighborhood, 80 percent of adults do not have a high school diploma, and the average annual household income is less than $10,000. With support from committed volunteers, Horton’s Kids’ goal is to change the life trajectory of children by providing academic, youth development, and health and basic needs supports. Position: Youth Case Manager

Details: Horton’s Kids is seeking a Part-time Youth Case Manager to ensure that youth participants in grades 7th-12th grade stay on track to graduate from high school by building the attitudes, habits, and behaviors to be successful. Using identified risk and protective elements of youth development, this role supports and encourages youth to make good decisions and overcome obstacles to be successful.

As part of the organization’s Team Around a Child model, this position will support two to five youth for the duration of the 2018-19 school year by meeting regularly with the youth and coordinating with parents, teachers, mentors, tutors, college/career coaches, and Horton’s Kids staff on an ongoing basis. The goal of the Youth Case Manager is to engage with the youth and members of the “team” to mitigate risks and build upon strengths so that the youth progresses successfully to the next grade, gains critical study and test-taking skills, and develops the habits, behaviors, and attitudes necessary to becoming a successful adult, including:

·        Goal-setting

·        Persistence

·        Communication

·        Impulse control

·        Organization and planning

·        Time management

·        Self-advocacy

·        Knowledge transfer and application

This is a part-time position with estimated 2 hours per week per youth, and reports directly to a member of the full-time team based on the grade level the Youth Case Manager is assigned. Work will generally take place in the afternoons, evenings, and weekends at the Horton’s Kids Community Resource Center. Additionally, this position will support the broader goals of the organization, particularly with regard to education, youth development, and social emotional learning.
