This position is located in the DC Department of Corrections (DOC), Office of the Deputy Director for Operations. The mission of the DOC is to ensure public safety for citizens of the District by providing an orderly, safe, secure, and humane environment for the confinement of pretrial detainees and sentenced inmates, while providing meaningful opportunities for community reintegration.

Duties and Responsibilities 

Receives and inspects all incoming and outgoing inmate mail and packages based on compliance with pertinent security regulations, processes, and procedures. Completes receipt and ensures contents have been approved for receipt by verification of inmate approved package voucher. 

Determines handling of all outgoing packages, ascertaining source, postage due, billing party and documentation. Opens and inspects inmate mail for illegal contraband merchandise and/or unauthorized correspondence. Notifies supervisor upon discovery and assist with the disposal of contraband. Prepares written reports on incidents observed, if required. Removes all currency, money orders, checks, or savings bonds from incoming inmate mail and batch into the inmate locator system Jail and Community Corrections System (JACCS). 

Operates and maintains a variety of mail processing machinery and related office equipment. Recognizes problems with machinery and contacts Pitney Bowes and/or other related manufactures to request services, as necessary. Maintains receipt records, tracking numbers, logs, and files in accordance with departmental established guidelines. Records and files reports; reviews supplemental documents to track the status of outstanding, lost, misaddressed mail, etc. Participates in the orderly and accurate notation and upkeep of a variety of operating forms and types of official mail designations used, packages mailed out by various Divisions within the facility, and inmate personal property items sent out of the facilities.
