Registration open for Black Girls Code In-Person Summer Camp
Participants will create animated art that reflects innovations throughout history that have inspired them or that they are inspired to create. Are you in awe of the modern GPS and know you would struggle to get anywhere without it - then thank Dr. Gladys West and code a vehicle that moves across the screen with the click of the mouse. Inspired by the work of Garret Morgan and his creation of the traffic light? Then code an art piece that changes from green to yellow to red with the swipe of the cursor. Or maybe the most awesome innovation in your eyes is a smartphone! Then code a digital smartphone that toggles apps as the viewer presses the mouse. Or perhaps a student has a brilliant innovation they cannot wait to show the world? Then they can code it as a moving/interactive piece of art for the world to see!
- The possibilities are endless! Each day, across the 10-day summer camp students will not only learn how to code animated digital art using p5.js, a JavaScript library for creative coding, with a focus on making coding accessible and inclusive for artists and beginners, but they will also learn about inspiring innovators of our time and their incredible inventions that have changed the world.
- Featured innovators include Marie Van Brittan Brown inventor of home security systems. Garret Morgan inventor of the traffic light, and Frederick McKinley Jones, the King of Cooling, received over 40 patents for the development of refrigeration systems. Participants will also reflect on the life-changing effects of modern innovations such as the internet, smartphones, electric light, and automobiles while exploring promising innovations that will impact our future such as emotional artificial intelligence, self-driving cars, robotics, and 3D Printing.
